I hope you understand what's a torque converter. You need to understand the complications. The flow rate, the pressure and if the ATF pump is able to generate the adequate pressure to start your torque converter, the diameter, the input shaft diameter, the working torque the torque converter produces and whether the transmission is able to take it. How are you going to find the correct torque converter for the transmission?

Torque converters are traditionally less efficient than clutches. But the newer torque converter developed by ZF (http://www.zf.com/corporate/en/products/product_range/cars/driveline_components/torque_converter/torque_converter.html) has been very well received in terms of fuel economy and performance. And again.. the price...

My heart felt opinion: If you want a fast car, buy a fast car.
